Fill It Up!

The British & American Auto Repair building at the corner of Orange Ave. and Palmetto St. is an area rarity – an old time filling station still serving its original function. According to the Volusia County Property Appraiser this beauty dates to 1950. When it first opened gasoline was going for about  20 cents a gallon and the average cost of a new car was $1,510.  On the other hand, a new black and white television set would take $249 of your $3,200 annual wage. The front entrance shows what must have been the original address, 154 Orange Ave. The business uses 241 S. Palmetto as its current address

Boy…the brick gas stations sure look a lot classier than today’s tin shacks, huh?
