Handpainted Signs and Spinach Pie

Signs painted by hand aren’t necessarily “vintage” but they do often remind me of the photos that Walker Evans took in the 1930s for the Farm Services Administration. Below is his classic “Roadside Stand near Birmingham, Alabama” (1936), followed by my photo taken on the corner of Beach Street and Orange Avenue, Daytona Beach on 11/29/11.  By the way, Stavro’s pizza is pretty good (and I trust that the chef doesn’t really rub his nose in the crust, as the sign would indicate), but I prefer their spinach pie.

Posted with a nod to one of my favorite bloggists, Ginger of Deep Fried Kudzu @ www.deepfriedkudzu.com, from whom I stole the idea for this entry.
