Our Banner Girl

This shapely 19-foot fiberglass Jantzen girl has welcomed shoppers to Stamie’s Smart Swimwear at 8 N. Ocean Ave., Daytona Beach since 1965.  (Photos taken 10/27/11). According to a Wikipedia entry:

Jantzen’s iconic Diving Girl was designed by Frank and Florenz Clark. She first made her appearance in advertisements in 1920, wearing a daring red suit, stocking cap and stockings, and first appeared on Jantzen swimming suits in 1923. Over the years, the stockings and stocking cap were dropped, and in the late 1940s, the suit became strapless. The whole design was modernized again in the 1980s. The Diving Girl remains a recognized international brand and is one of the longest lived apparel icons.

Hi, My uncle Frank Citek bought a house in what was then known as North Daytona. It was very close to the Reef Motel which was the largest motel that far north in the early 50’s. I never see anything referring to North Daytona. He claimed to have bought the lot for $3,000 and was offered the 2 adjoining lots for a total of $7000 which included about a hundred feet along A1A. Do you have any info on N. Daytona or the Reef?
